Rapper Lizzo is one of the hottest music acts – and even Shawn Mendes seems to be a fan! A pop star video that admires rapper on the red carpet at the BRIT Awards in London on Wednesday has been circulating online. On Thursday, Lizzo distributed his clip, where Mendes enthusiastically watched him do an interview before the awards show. “For you men who look at you like @shawnmendes look at me doing press,” Lizzo wrote a funny video on Instagram. In his Instagram story, he added: “@shawnmendes loves me. That’s PERIOD. WITHOUT BITCH QUESTIONS. ”
So who is Lizzo?
Grew up in Houston, the 30-year-old artist (real name: Melissa Jefferson) moved to Minnesota and became a rising star in the Minneapolis underground hip-hop scene. After getting regional acclaim for its debut album Lizzobangers (2013) and second-class Big Grrrl Small World (2015), the rapper scored a major label record contract with Atlantic.
In 2016 Lizzo dropped the acclaimed Coconut Oil EP, which included his hit “Good as Hell.” Now, after a series of underestimated singles (his funky bop “Boys” is arguably the best song of 2018), musicians – who dropped their ranger banger “Juice” in January – is preparing to release its first major-label album, Cuz I Love You on April 19.
Below, everything you need to know about Lizzo.
He is a classically trained flautist.
“I was in the marching band from eighth grade to college, Cougar marching band at the University of Houston. I am a piccolo player. I am the worst piccolo in this country, because I have big lungs, “Lizzo told NPR.” And I’m really determined. I rented a flute, and I just started listening to James Galway and songs on the radio, right really trying to sound good and be the best. ”
Lizzo played the flute in many of his songs, and he put the instrument into live shows. Do not believe? Just look at his Instagram feed, where he often shares impromptu flute solos.
Lizzo appeared on the 36th studio album The Purple One, Plectrumelectrum in 2014; he was featured on the track “BoyTrouble” with longtime collaborator Sophia Eris. “That gives me confidence to be an artist, not just a rapper or singer or a girl in a band,” he told Rolling Stone working with the icon. “When you are an artist, you become immortal. … When you are an artist, your career is not determined by trends or age. That’s the biggest lesson I learned from the Prince: preserving positivity, and also art is forever. Be immortal. “He is the main positive proponent of the body.
Lizzo was pleased with his role as a body positivity advocate – “But that’s not a label I want to use on my own. That’s just where I am, “he recently told New York magazine The Cut. “All of these hashtags are to convince people that your appearance is fine. Isn’t that crazy? I say I love myself, and they like it,” God, he’s so brave. He is very political. “For what? What I’m saying is ‘I love myself, son of a bitch!'”

In 2018, Lizzo made a memorable appearance as a guest judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race and the contestants were moved to “Good as Hell.” “Working with RuPaul was a dream. That is a bucket list. I was very lucky to be in the same room as RuPaul. You learn a lot just by watching how RuPaul operates, “he told Rolling Stone about his cameo. “It seems that there are several petitions for me to become a permanent judge.” He has several celebrity fans besides Shawn Mendes!
Some A-list artists have invited Lizzo on the road with them: Last year he opened for slash actress BFFs Taylor Swift BFFs, as well as Florence + the Machine. And a quick scan of his Instagram account shows that he has many famous followers, including: Queer Eye Jonathan Van Ness, Awkwafina, protégé of Beyoncé Chloe x Halle, SZA, John Mayer, Matt Bomer, and The Good Place starring D’Arcy Carden and Jameela Jamil. He will debut on the big screen.
Lizzo is set to make his cinematic debut, lending his voice to the upcoming animated adventure of the Ugly Dolls.
